The hype around 5G has been going around for quite a while now with initial trials starting as early as 2018 where big telecom firms like Verizon and Vodafone pledged to provide and upgrade existing network infrastructure for 5G services. But, what exactly is 5G and how does it make itself the next generation king of networking. 5G is 5th Generation Mobile Network. It’s a new global wireless standard which can be used to virtually connect people, objects, devices and many more. For a network to be considered as a 5G network it shall provide a network speed of at least 1 gbps to tens of people or 10 mbps to 1000 people in a single area. Imagine the current network speed multiplied by 10, which can help you stream or download content instantly. But there are various practical purpose for 5G as well. Remote manufacturing and controlling requires a high speed stable connection which 5G can provision easily. Robotics control, reduced latency and many more are some of the advantages of 5G
But how would it benefit E-Commerce? Well let’s start with AR and VR. These technologies not being so common today might be the future of E-commerce. With an ultra-fast 5G network, VR or AR based shopping will be buttery smooth which earlier were restricted by network or device capabilities. However, with the advent of 5G, devices will become smarter and powerful and capabilities will increase tenfold and these rare technologies will become quite common. Another primary advantage for E-commerce is the increase in the number of Customers accessing the website or mobile app which along with a scaled up architecture will be able to cater to more customers leading to more revenue. AI assistants have already evolved to great lengths but with 5G in place, customers can contact and download information from these AI assistants at blazing fast speed which enhances the customer experience and also helps in delivering personalized recommendations. 5G will also provide a boost to the wearables sector wherein data transfers will be at high speeds, low latency which can also enable businesses send customized push notifications. It gives the freedom to businesses as to how they would want to engage with their customers without the limitations or bottleneck of network speed. 5G will expand device connection capabilities and types of devices being connected to the Internet. Not only mobile devices, smart devices like a shopping AR based mirror at shops, voice assistants and many more that would expand the reach of the E-Commerce business to Customers. With current limitation of network infrastructure that needs to be upgraded to accommodate 5G capabilities, we look into a future fast, connected and secure.
